NinBit takes a look inside this Mario-themed baseball title from Namco.
An unconventional round of golf, a tennis game fueled by volleys impossible to execute in real life, a kart-racing frenzy fraught with items to boost one's chances and trounce his opponents, and an annual fiesta that somehow manages to sell amid accusations of staleness--Does any of this ring a bell? Recreational ventures have taken place for the Mario franchise, but is it truly wrong for Nintendo to so capitalize on the success of an iconic personality? Unlike the multitude of licensed software releases and low-budget imitators, Nintendo's Mario offshoots have managed to feel original and fun, undoubtedly due to determination from the publisher taking an innovative route, defining and creating genres along the way. Mario Superstar Baseball continues in that model and tradition and excels, delivering an alternative, arcade-style take on America's favorite pastime.
Mario Superstar Baseball is immensely refreshing for one primary reason: it is an arcade-style hardball game and not a serious simulation that attempts to properly emulate the many facets of the sport. Seeking inspiration from yesterday's baseball games and not the likes of MVP Baseball and World Series Baseball, the game manages to feel like an anachronism, matching today's graphics and production values with the convenient, simple-yet-entertaining game-play concepts from the NES days--and throwing some Mushroom Kingdom charm into the mix. The game design affords itself well for multi-player; it's highly accessible and offers a wealth of mini-games and modes of play to investigate.
The ever-welcome simplicity plays a role in both the pitching and batting mechanics of the title--it's a game of timing and little else. From the mound, pitching is a matter of getting the ball across the plate; there need not be any concerns about the infamous "strike zone" above the knees and below the shoulders or wherever it may be--it's all about throwing the ball across the plate. And in the batter's box, proper position and a precisely timed tap of the A button are all that's necessary to get on base.
Most modern baseball simulations rely on a system of pitching that maps each pitcher's selection of throws onto several buttons of the controller; different pitchers would have different pitches in their repertoire, and numerically rated attributes would determine a given player's ability. In Mario's game, a pitch is a pitch; pressing the A button will throw the ball the same way each time. The system is deceptively simplistic, giving the player the options of curving the ball with the analog stick following the release and holding the button down longer to throw a faster charge pitch. (Correct timing on the release of a charge pitch will have the word "nice" displayed on the screen, and the ball whip across the plate at a greater rate.) Pressing down on the analog stick executes a change-up. In addition, each character employs a different pitching style and is gauged for ability on a bar-like scale. Getting a fresh arm in there with the right skills and style can make a world of difference, and the developers encourage you to experiment; pitchers can be exchanged completely on the fly (no pun intended).
Batting in Mario Superstar Baseball has to be the most celebrated point of change from the normal simulation. Once again, the traditional sim relies heavily on statistics and ratings; you know your pitcher will be lucky to reach the outfield, and pretty much every random mustachioed man you've never heard of will be less than competent with the bat. To top it all off, those games not only have the player position himself to hit the ball, but also worry about the height of it and its position in the strike zone. This complexity makes offensive success hard to come by. This game follows a more player-friendly model. The batter can be moved in four directions within the confines of the box, and getting a hit is easily accomplished by pressing the button at the right time. The "charge" feature works on offense too--but the extra power is easily frustrated because the timing must be more exact. The game can be quite stingy with home runs, but that's how it ought to be; smacking one of these rare shots is rather satisfying.
The title strikes a chord similar to nails on a chalkboard when it comes to the baserunning mechanics, and the credit goes to nothing more or less than some of the worst artificial intelligence I've ever encountered. The system is pretty simple; Y plus the direction of the base advances, and X retreats, leaving the B button on hand for a handy speed boost. However, the execution is disappointing at best; the running man is less than responsive, and the Mushroom Kingdom denizens are more than happy to make a mad dash at the slightest strike of the bat--whether it's over the fence or bound for an outfielder's glove. This, of course, causes some painful, costly outs.
With the fielding, Namco stuck with what's been popular; the ground on which a fly ball will land is denoted by a ring one must step into, and throwing the ball among the bases is done with a button and the analog stick in the direction of the base. The fielders aren't without error, though. Fielding skills are included in the mildly important player attributes, and even the highly skilled will make mistakes on occasion. In some circumstances--often due to positioning--an outfielder will miss the catch, and the ball will strike his head, sending the projectile in another direction, leaving a teammate or the initial fielder to scramble for it. The animation is humorous, as are many in the Mario spin-offs, which gives the game an extra coat of polish. In addition, the outfield AI has some positioning issues; the game will automatically give one control of a fielder in the vicinity of where the ball may land. And if it manages to squeeze by him, oddly enough, teammates nearby that were also running for assistance, will stop moving; and it's literally a delay before the game changes the human-controlled character to retrieve the ball. In addition, the A button is used for two things: jumping up for the catch and (when pressed near the circle denoting ball position) making a diving catch. I cannot count the number of times my character jumped when I was attempting to make a diving catch; and it's costly.
All-in-all, one major message must be conveyed on the subject of Mario Superstar Baseball's game-play. The developers at Namco put all the fundamentals in place, in the model of classic, proven software. The alternative take actually makes the game more entertaining and easy to play for the gamer; the manual isn't even necessary for a first-timer to figure out enough to compete on the weakest CPU difficulty settings. This makes the title a great videogame version of America's game to own. In addition, Namco included a sense of urgency that completely enhances the experience. B-button mashing can make all the difference in successfully stealing a base, making a big play in the outfield, and balking base-rounding opponents. This drive is the essence of a great multi-player game; the determined can outperform the skilled, which should provide for a grand succession of nail-biters and frustrating and competitive matches.
MSB houses the same distinct personality as its sister Mario Sports titles. Power-ups known as "team stars" can initiate powerful pitches and swings of the bat similar to the power shots from Mario Power Tennis. Earned through successful at-bats (outs for the pitcher, a hit for the batter) and special circumstances on the field, these specials manage to be a precious commodity without feeling out of place or gimmicky; and they are unique to the characters that use them.
The venue designs are one of the game's best features--once again, intelligent, and full of Mario flavor. Like last year's Mario Tennis, the diamonds are all themed, mainly based on characters (likely to suit the game's challenge mode). The nice thing about them is the variety--from Wario's desert homestead to a field straight from Donkey Kong Country, no two courses feel the same; and each is populated with outfield obstacles: klaptraps; piranha plants that inhale baseballs and spit them out in other directions; giant, suspended blocks; etc. The general idea is to detract from mundanity and expectancy; rather, to make it less like "real" baseball and pack an element of surprise. These diamonds certainly have a lot of shine.
