Six reasons to love and remember Nintendo in the new year.
Every year, Nintendo has supplied gamers with something to remember, from games like GameCube’s Metroid Prime in 2002 to Nintendo DS’s Mario Kart DS in 2005. 2005 could easily be considered one of Nintendo’s greatest years in a long time in so many ways, housing the two top-selling consoles throughout the globe in 2005, the GBA SP and the Nintendo DS, to supplying the videogame industry with the biggest surprise of all time, the unveiling of the Revolution’s innovative and intuitive controller.

With 2005 now over, many wonder what the new year will bring. Can we expect a greater year? Can we expect Nintendo to out-do their successes in 2005 with 2006? To help remedy this question for gamers, Ninbit brings you the Big 6 in 2006, the six reasons to love the Big N in 2006!

#6 Metroid Prime Hunters DS

This is a major event for Nintendo, Metroid Prime Hunters will be the first ever first-person shooter online by the Big N. Metroid Prime almost instantaneously became one of the greatest additions to the GameCube’s library, and the DS version will be a follow up to the two on the GamCube. Also, the multiplayer on the demo turned out to be extremely fun and very exciting. Originally set to be released in November of 2005, Metroid Prime Hunters was delayed until the first quarter of 2006; almost ensuring hard work is going into the creation of this game at Nintendo. The demo that came free with the DS helped to sell many of the systems, and the online mode is completely free! The game may change the way we think about Metroid games forever. With Wi-Fi connectivity, many gates are open for developers at Nintendo.

#5 New Super Mario Brothers DS

Originally announced at E3 in May of 2004 along with the first unveiling of the Nintendo DS and Mario Kart DS, New Super Mario Brothers DS is deeply in development. With multiplayer co-op, a brilliant blend of both 3D visuals in 2D environments, and bearing the Mario Bros title, this game is almost a guaranteed winner. Since very little is known about the new features this game will implement, one may find himself asking, “What’s the big deal? Is this really a big deal for 2006?” In a single word, yes; and I will tell you why. Mario, easily the father of videogames and the most noticeable video game character of all time, is going back to his roots; that's right, New Super Mario Bros. DS will be the first completely new side-scrolling Super Mario title since the Super Nintendo days. If that isn’t a big deal, then what is?

#4 Zelda Twilight Princess

Ah, yes, the long-awaited title is here at last. For too long have we waited to save Hyrule, and now, in the year 2006, we shall avenge Hyrule for the sake of the world! For many months we have pondered upon the new arsenal Link shall have. We have stared at pictures of Link, mature, yet again. We have stared at beautiful woods, full of lush foliage and dark dungeons full of terrible creatures and evil minions, sworn to a terrible, much greater foe. Amazing scenes such as these unlock the true graphical potential of the GameCube, and we anxiously wait to see all of this and fight through it, while being serenaded with wonderfully composed music. Our time has come, at last! Not only will we be getting the mature and graphically jaw dropping Legend of Zelda title we have been waiting for since Nintendo 64’s Majora’s Mask; but according to Mario and Legend of Zelda’s father, Shigeru Miyamoto, this is going to be the best Legend of Zelda title and the last time we will play a Legend of Zelda game the same way.

#3 The Nintendo Revolution Arrives!

As I stated in the introduction, Nintendo will always be the company to supply memorable moments each year, and the arrival of Nintendo’s next home console will be no exception. Although at this point the Revolution can either be the hottest new machine on the market and follow the DS in being one of Nintendo’s biggest successes or completely bomb and fade away quicker then Sega’s Dreamcast, the Revolution sounds like a gold mine. Its small, cheap, offers free and wireless online play right out of the box, allows for over 20 years of Nintendo hits for download, utilizes next-generation graphics, is completely backwards compatible with GameCube games and controllers, and offers the amazing new pointer controller for innovative and refreshing new ways to play.

This game console is being admired by all the biggest developers in the world; every gamer is watching with excitement and even fear--this is Nintendo’s chance to show the world that innovation is key and that the industry needs to change. 2006 is going to either be the year that Nintendo does something amazing in the videogame industry or the year that sports one of the videogame industry’s greatest failures.

#2 Super Smash Bros. 3 Online

If you have a GameCube, you really should be excited about this sequel. After all, Super Smash Bros. Melee is easily the greatest multiplayer game of all time. Across the globe, tournaments have been held featuring Super Smash Bros. Melee. With online capability, this game will have evolved immensely. No longer will you have to invite someone over to duke it out with Link vs. Mario and such. Instead, you can just sit at your own homes and fight each other from miles away, or team up and fight two people who are doing the same exact thing! The possibilities are endless. Let’s just hope that the game comes out at the launch of the Revolution, as expected.

#1 Super Mario Revolution

In 2006, not only will Mario be going back to his roots on the DS with New Super Mario Bros. DS, but Mario will also be changing the face of gaming.....again! This game was originally intended for the GameCube under the name Mario 128 and has been in development since the release of Super Mario Sunshine. For the past three years, fans have eagerly waited for the unveiling of Mario 128 at E3 like Nintendo had promised, walking away disappointed every year as they nibbled on crumbs for details every few months time and time again.

Although, again, not much is known about this title, the unveiling of it will be huge and will undoubtedly be the most memorable moment of 2006. As Mario did with Super Mario 64 back in 1996 and with Super Mario Bros. in 1989, Shigeru Miyamoto and his team are promising a revelation in the gaming world with this title, so much so that they have been reluctant to unveil the details due to idea poachers who may steal the idea and beat Nintendo to the market as they have done so many times in the past.

Now we all wait so eagerly for the unveiling of Super Mario Revolution. We must now look to E3 this May where Nintendo will finally reveal the title. Will it live up to its many years of mystery and anticipation?
