Nintendo dishes out another member to the abandoned Mario mini series Super Mario Bros, and keeps to the core with side-scrolling action splashed with some new next-gen features.

Let’s take a look back in gaming, approximately ten years ago—a decade, if you will, after Mario first hit the scene. Yes, legend has it he was sucked through some pipes into the Mushroom Kingdom. Oh, did he hate the Mushroom Kingdom. He showed his hatred by stomping on every single living thing that passed his way; of course that was a sacrifice he was willing to make to survive, but that’s not the point. The only things he showed interest in would be Donkey Kong captive Pauline, the Princess Peach Toadstool, his brother Luigi and dinosaur buddy Yoshi, up until the 3D days when he actually began to socialize with the townsfolk. What I’m getting at is…well, he’s back to those days—he’s back to being the good old Mario brother, the goomba-stomping plumber with no mercy.

”New Super Mario Bros.” first appeared at E3 2004, and later Nintendo was nice enough to show us a clip of some action in 2005, which ultimately gave a few hints and details about what the game is about. For one, it’s easy to tell that the game is in both 3D and 2D, the characters being three-D, and the backgrounds (not all) being two-dimensional. Another easy thing to notice is it’s back to side scrolling, which, if you ask many Mario fans, is the best way to go. Yet another thing would have to be how much animation they’ve added over all these years. For one, the developers have a much better graphic system to work with, and for two the GameCube and N64 Mario titles have added more detail to how the characters should look. Everything looks great in terms of graphics, the enemies especially. From the pokeys to the goombas to the koopa troopas to the thwomps (Seems the Mario bros. have learned a thing or two, or bought some better boots, because you can now jump and destroy thwomps.), they all look well constructed and animated.

In addition to some new things, Nintendo has made sure to make this game a Super Mario Bros. classic. For one, Princess Peach seems to have done some renovation in the Mushroom Kingdom, because the blocks have changed, and, of course, the pipes have now been built in four-way stops, which can take you underground and switch the playing screen to the bottom. They’ve also made sure to add the usual capes that litter the ground, coins that are cleverly hidden by the townsfolk in floating boxes, the fire flowers that grow and, of course, the many mushrooms and falling stars. But don’t be fooled; this isn’t just the same game from a decade ago with better graphics; the developers have added some new features as expected. Like, for instance, the mushrooms have upgraded and make you about ten times bigger then usual, making it look like you’re on a Bowser rampage as in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. Also, the goombas seem to have caught on that eating the mushrooms is actually a good thing, or they just became edible to the creatures, because if you don’t hurry up and get that stray mushroom in front of you, a goomba will get it, and that means trouble for you.

Over the years, you know Mario had to have visited a dojo a few times a week, because he has proven time and time again that he can pull off a good jump. Well, he’s carried the many jumps that he has learned over the years onto this title, including the wall jump, the ground pound, back flip, spin jump and more, all of which were introduced in the 3D Mario games. Also, Mario has learned something that he has not ever thought to do. He’s grabbed tails, jumped on people, squirted water, thrown turtle shells and dropped banana peels but he has never thought of resorting to actual fighting techniques when it comes to 2D games. Such techniques added here include kicking and punching, which is something that can be taught through the mushroom, apparently.

Most Mario gamers know of Luigi's background, and that he goes everywhere Mario does, so he must have decided to go learn some new jumps, too; the Poltergeist 3000 must have gotten boring. Every jump that Mario pulls off, Luigi can pull off, but wait, where does Luigi fit into this game? Well, grab a friend and get his DS within wireless range, and he’ll become Luigi. Travel through three different side-scrolling courses with your buddy in a race to see who can get to the finish faster. It works kind of like the Mario kart series; familiar items such as lightning bolts (shrink other player) and blue blocks are now available. The blue blocks will, when hit, take you to where your opponent is. Also, rings will act as checkpoints for when you accidentally bump into a trotting goomba and fall over and die; you will be taken back to the last ring you jumped through. Also, speaking of jumping, if you ever get frustrated, just jump on your opponent for a little while—it’s all in good taste.

Also, you know it can’t be a normal Mario game without a cool new feature, and you know it won’t be a normal DS game until it utilizes the two screens and the stylus, so that’s just what Nintendo did. They’ve added at the bottom screen an inventory that stores up to three items, the time left before Mario magically dies of some sort of disease and a bar that shows you how long until Mario finishes the course and gains the odd pleasure of vandalizing the flagpole. Whenever you feel like letting loose, touch an item with your stylus to eat a mushroom and start a truckin’.

The game looks to be great, but not another classic. Something seems to be missing, and needs to be added. They stick to the roots, but definitely need some new branches. It looks to be an old Super Mario Bros. game with a new graphical look and some of the DS capabilities worked into it. We know Bowser is in the game, as he’s shown in a screenshot, so there must be some sort of storyline, but that's a given, is it not? Hopefully we'll see more of it in the coming months before it's released.
